No culinary journey is complete without a stop in Italy. Where else is the populace so passionate about food that their government defines what constitutes a pizza Margherita?

We aren’t quite that strict on Maui, and such open-mindedness landed Chef Wesley’s Moloka‘i Sweet Potato Gnocchi the Best of the Fest prize at Ka‘anapali Fresh last year. Pulehu’s more traditional Italian preparations are just as great. In fact, my pickiest foodie friend confessed to me in a whisper while dining there recently that the meatballs and marinara gravy were just as good as her mama and nona’s. “Don’t tell them I said so!” she pleaded. Oh, I won’t tell a soul.
