As the sun sinks behind Mala Wharf, hula dancers sway and whirl rhythmically before an enchanted audience. A live band croons in Hawaiian, torches flicker, and pounding drums echo. Welcome to a typical evening at Old Lāhainā Lūʻau, one of Maui’s most iconic celebrations of island culture — and arguably Maui’s best luau.
In 2024, Old Lahaina Luau was awarded its 20th consecutive ‘Aipono Award for Best Luau. Voted on by the readers of Maui No Ka Oi Magazine, the ‘Aipono Awards reflect the community’s voice. Old Lahaina Luau’s 20 consecutive wins highlight the lasting impression it has made on both locals and visitors.
So, what makes Old Lahaina Luau so special — and what makes it stand out against Maui’s myriad other luaus?
Old Lahaina’s allure is multifaceted. While most luaus in Hawaii are heralded as a cultural activity, very few authentically represent Hawaiian culture. Old Lahaina, however, is rooted in cultural and historical accuracy.
This foundation of authenticity is evident in every aspect of Old Lahaina Luau. The pre-show activities feature Hawaiian games like ulu maika, an ancient Hawaiian sport similar to bowling, and a traditional imu unveiling ceremony. And, whereas other Maui luaus serve non-traditional dishes such as chow mein and fried rice, Old Lahaina Luau dedicates an entire course to traditional Hawaiian fare — which includes kalua pork, lau lau, pa‘i ‘ai (pounded taro root) and more.
“We stick strictly to the Hawaiian culture, down to our food, to the show,” longtime Old Lahaina Luau employee Kona Pokipala told MNKO in 2023. “We try to educate our guests about even down to the taro root, our pre-shows, and everything. It all has to do with Hawaiian native culture. … That’s what our culture is all about, anyway. Friends, ‘ohana (family), and just having a good time. That’s what we do here at the luau.”
When the stage lights come up at Old Lahaina Luau, guests are swept into the rich history of Hawai‘i, guided by the mesmerizing rhythm of hula and ancient mo‘olelo (stories) of revered gods and legendary chiefs.
The Old Lahaina Luau performance depicts two thousand years of history, beginning with Pele’s arrival and the first Polynesians to settle in Hawai‘i. Each dance transports the audience through pivotal moments in Hawaiian history, from the thriving pre-contact culture to the arrival of missionaries and the suppression of hula, nearly lost to time.
Old Lahaina Luau is unique in sticking purely to Hawaiian history and culture. While many of Maui’s other luaus incorporate Hawaiian aspects, they also include dances from outside Hawaii. The Samoan fire knife dance is one of the most widely recognized Pacific dances thanks to its presence at luaus around Hawaii. But no, it’s not Hawaiian — and therefore not shown at Old Lahaina Luau. Yet, despite no fiery finale, Old Lahaina remains Maui’s best-loved luau.
Beyond the traditional fare and impressive entertainment, Old Lahaina Luau was one of the first businesses to reopen on Front Street following the 2023 Lahaina wildfires. The luau complex was miraculously spared by the fire, and officially reopened in March of 2024 — extending a beacon of hope to all of Lahaina.
