Camp Ke’anae, located on the Hana Highway near the Ke’anae penisula, is 9 acres of absolute serenity & peacefulness overlooking the ocean. It is a beautiful picture of nature and a place to stay on Hana Highway.
“…Ke‘anae lies just beyond Honomanu Valley. This is a unique wet-taro plant growing ahupua‘a (district)… It was here that the early inhabitants of Maui first settled, planting upland rain-watered taro plant far up into forested areas. In the lower part of the valley, which is covered mostly by grass now, an area of irrigated taro was developed on the east side…..” (Kepā Maly, Cultural Historian).
The peninsula was once barren lava beds. It was cultivated by the inhabitants carrying soil in baskets from the valley down to the lava point. A small lo‘I (taro patch) near the western side of the land formerly belonged to the chief of Keʻanae (the Big Mullet); It is said that the entire locality took its name from this small sacred lo‘i. Here,…the taro that grew in the sacred patch of the aliʻi (Rulers) was reputed to be of great size. (Kepā Maly, Cultural Historian).
