Jazz Maui and ProArts Playhouse present Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and composer Charlie Porter on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at the ProArts Playhouse, 1280 South Kihei Road, Kihei at 7 pm. Tickets are available at www.ProArtsMaui.org.

Described by Chicago Jazz magazine as “…one of the most brilliant and imaginative contemporary composers of mainstream jazz…stimulating and emotive original music with a rare blend of sophistication and organic spontaneity”, Porter’s music has also be described as “fluid, expressive, and magnificent” by DownBeat magazine.

Charlie Porter holds a degree from The Juilliard School where he studied under famed trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis. Porter also holds a degree from the Manhattan School of Music in jazz and classical performance and he was a Fulbright scholar at the Paris Conservatory.  He has toured the world as a side-man and band leader in jazz and also as a classical soloist and chamber musician. His collaboration on opera star Joyce DoDonato’s crossover album “Songplay” earned him a Grammy Award in 2019. Currently, he is an adjunct professor of trumpet at New York University.

Joining Charlie on Wednesday, April 26, are bassist Marcus Johnson, pianist Jeff Hellmer, drummer Duke Gadd, and saxophonist John Zangrando.
