International Coastal Cleanup Day with Pacific Whale Foundation

September 21 @ 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM

FREE

International Coastal Cleanup Day (ICCD) is an annual opportunity in which communities in over 100 countries come together to remove debris from their local coastal environments. Most of this debris is plastic. Pacific Whale Foundation research shows that 70-90% of debris found on and around Maui is composed of plastic, which has disastrous impacts for all marine life, from coral and the small organisms that constitute plankton to some of the largest mammals on Earth.

This year, Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) staff and volunteers will be stationed at a range of coastal areas throughout the island. We invite residents and visitors of Maui to join in removing harmful debris from the marine environment and to reduce the amount of litter that reaches the beach in the first place by rethinking daily habits through our new RETHINK campaign. It is our conviction that this two-pronged approach is key to one day successfully ridding the ocean of plastic waste.

Kahului Harbor

Closed-toed shoes and sun protection advised

Lahaina Harbor
8am-12pm
Meet at Kamehameha Iki park before proceeding to the harbor

ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve
8:45am-12pm
Lunch provided by Nalu’s
Remove debris from this precious marine habitat while exploring an area of the reserve that is typically off-limits to the public. Although there is no elevation change, we will be hiking on a trail through `A`a lava rock, which can be sharp and uneven with no shade for about a mile. It is a beautiful hike but if you feel hesitant about your abilities, we encourage you to join us at another location. Closed-toed shoes are mandatory and long-sleeved shirts, pants, and hats are recommended. We will not have to hike the debris out with us, as it will be removed by helicopter.

Sunday 22 Storm Drain Stenciling
9am-12pm
Join Pacific Whale Foundation, the County of Maui and State of Hawai‘i Department of Transportation Highways Division for a storm drain stenciling project in Waiehu on Sunday Sep 22 from 9AM to 12PM. Meet at Waiehu Terrace Park. Volunteers are invited to paint awareness messages of “No Dumping – Drains to Ocean” at storm drain inlets in Waiehu that drain to Ka’ehu Bay in order to raise awareness that storm drains empty directly into the ocean and to discourage dumping of pollutants into the drains. Volunteers must be age 12 and up.

To volunteer for ICCD events, pre-register at pacificwhale.org/volunteer. Click the first link on the page, then choose your cleanup after you receive our confirmation email.

Mahalo for helping Maui’s coastal environments.
