Akakū Upstairs: Why, Why, Wailuku? – City Center Redevelopment 8/15/19
August 15 @ 6:00 PM - 7:30 PMfree
Akakū Maui Community Television will host a salon about the redevelopment of Wailuku’s downtown area and civic center on Thursday, August 15 from 6-7:30 pm at 333 Dairy Rd., Suite 204, in Kahului. The county civic center and downtown region of Wailuku town have been on a slow decline for decades as business development moved to Kahului and other areas of the island. Now, funding has been set aside to make improvements to the area surrounding the courthouse and county offices.
County Planner Erin Wade, the department’s point person on the project, will cover the various phases of development, its impact on traffic and parking and new features planned, such as public art installations.
Wade studied Urban and Regional Planning at Michigan State University and served on the East Lansing, MI, Planning Commission. She later went on to earn her Master’s Degree from UH Manoa while working for the City and County of Honolulu’s Traffic Calming division.
She will provide an update on the project’s progress and discuss mitigation efforts to deal with traffic and parking issues.
Salons are held Thursday evenings from 6-7:30 pm in the Akakū Media Lab, 333 Dairy Road, Suite 204, in Kahului, just upstairs from the Akakū TV studios and KAKU Radio. The presentations are taped for cablecast on Akaku Blue Channel 55 and made available for viewing “on-demand” through www.akaku.org/maui-salon-upstairs-vod/. These interesting and informative presentations are admission-free, but please RSVP to Akakū Maui Community Media at www.akaku.org/salons or call 808-871-5554 to let them know you are coming.
