Here in Hawaiʻi, we love our sushi. We’ll eat it in a cone, topped with poke, deep fried, dipped in shoyu, slathered in unagi sauce—you get the point. It’s pretty easy to get your hands (and your chopsticks) on sushi around here, and you’ll find the bite-sized morsels everywhere from convenience stores to traditional hole-in-the-wall restaurants to fine-dining establishments.
Sushi lovers in Hawaiʻi and beyond have a reason to celebrate this tiny wonder during International Sushi Day this Saturday, June 18. Lucky for us, Japengo at Hyatt Regency Maui is having a celebration of their own, and is offering a sweet deal for diners.
Before I tell you about the deal, I should probably note that Japengo is the place for sushi. The restaurant recently received three awards at the 2016 ʻAipono Restaurant Awards, taking home Gold for Best Sushi for the third consecutive year, Gold for Best Asian cuisine, and Silver for Restaurant of the Year. Sponsored by Maui No Ka ‘Oi Magazine, the ʻAipono Restaurant Awards annually recognize the best of Maui’s food, wine and hospitality industries, as voted by our readers.
Japengo Sushi Chef Jin Hosono created a Sushi Trio Special that features a California roll, a spicy tuna roll and a blackened ahi roll—all for just $24. Plus, diners who purchase the Sushi Trio Special will also receive a recipe card for the blackened ahi roll. Here’s a time lapse of this creation in the making. (Warning: Don’t watch this on an empty stomach!)
