The Maui Film Festival at Wailea celebrated its tenth anniversary in June, and did so in style. An estimated 20,000 people—one of the festival’s largest audiences ever—turned out to see some sixty films at Wailea Resort and the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Actress Zooey Deschanel (500 Days of Summer) received the festival’s Nova Award. Maui resident Willie Nelson received the Maverick Award. And the festival itself wins our respect for going green. With the help of Rising Sun Solar, the event was solar powered for the second year in a row.
The Sunday-night seafood finale of the 28th annual Kapalua Wine & Food Festival was a blast. MNKO sponsored the culinary extravaganza, awarding prizes to the two best dishes of the evening. Beneath filmy orange canopies, the crowd savored a wealth of wines and thirty exquisite dishes, courtesy of fifteen of Maui’s top restaurants. And who could resist the dessert buffet overflowing with chocolate brownies, truffles, and cakes? After dinner, on the packed dance floor, one plucky youngster appeared to be a shoo-in for future episodes of So You Think You Can Dance.
The evening began with prosecco—as many good evenings do. From that bubbly start, Mark Neal, of Neal Family Vineyards in Napa, shared the top of the crop from his portfolio of organic wines. An intimate party of twenty or so enjoyed the 2004 Rutherford cabernet, nicely paired with Chef Arnie Gonzalez’s Kona-coffee-roasted rack of lamb. Proceeds from all dinners in the ‘Aipono Winemakers series benefit the Maui Culinary Academy.
For thirteen years, the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and the Department of Education, Maui District, have offered professional development workshops on how to teach the arts, and how to use the arts to teach. Educators pay to attend the workshops, and give up precious weekend and after-school time to do so. Maui No Ka ‘Oi magazine was pleased to once again sponsor the May 16 Teachers Awards Dinner honoring those who had completed coursework that will make learning more joyful for all our kids.
Maui No Ka ‘Oi magazine celebrates Maui's culinary community by hosting this annual awards gala, a benefit for Maui Culinary Academy.
